POLL: Should There be a Left-Turn Restriction at Oceanport's Burnt Mill Circle?

There's a heated debate on Facebook about the issue. Do you have a better solution?

Click over to the Oceanport residents' Facebook page and you'll find a string of over 50 comments in two separate threads debating the new restriction of left-hand turns onto Burnt Mill Circle between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. from Sept. 1 to June 30.

Since the sign went up about two weeks ago in an effort to deter drivers - many of them students - from cutting through the neighborhood to avoid traffic lights and back ups, residents have been vocal either in support of or opposition to the new rule.

Those who support the new ordinance say it's a safety issue for kids who live on the street and need to wait outside for the schoolbus.

Some opposed to the restriction reason that as taxpayers that should have access to all borough roads and others wonder how Burnt Mill residents seemed to get special treatment from and officials.

Chief Harold Sutton told Patch that officers hadn't begun enforcing the restriction but will begin by handing out warnings to offenders for the first few weeks.

"We haven't been able to come up with a better solution," said Sutton. "We'll enforce it as best we can."
