'Major' Fish Kill Found In Shark River Inlet In Belmar

A "major" fish kill was found in the waters in the Shark River Inlet in Belmar Tueasday.

The state Department of Environmental Protection has taken samples and "we are cleaning up our area," said Mayor Matt Doherty.

"Very concerning," he wrote on his Twitter page.

Initial indications are that fish kill was due to low oxygen in the water. "We are still waiting for results of testing on dead fish," Doherty said.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the dredging had something to do with this. I walked the marina this morning and I couldn't believe how many fish were on the shoe and floating off in the distance as far as I could see!

Funny still no comment on the frivolous law suit he lost . Kudos to the patch to covering the decision , that was handed down last week.

In the short term dredging does cause problems, but it is needed to restore the area. Opening the channels back up to better tidal circulation will ultimately result in higher water quality as well as improved navigation.
