The Oceanport School District initiated a lock-down at Wolf Hill School on Wednesday when staff observed a "suspicious individual" near school grounds, according to Superintendent Andrew Orefice.
School staff immediately notified the Oceanport Police of the individual seen on a nearby resident's property around 2 p.m.
Police recommended a "perimeter lock-down" in which no one was permitted outside the school building, Orefice said in a message sent to the school community on Wednesday afternoon.
"According to police, our students and staff were not in any danger at anytime during this situation and the suspicious individual was never on school property," said Orefice.
Police conducted an immediate investigation and then lifted the lockdown and dismissal proceeeded on the normal schedule. Officers were present at the school during dismissal as an added precaution, he added.
Police will continue to investigate the incident, said Orefice.
