Little Silver School Psychologist Suspended After Marijuana Arrest

Michele Thompson was charged with distribution of marijuana and endangering the welfare of a child.

Little Silver's school psychologist was suspended by the district following an arrest last month for alleged distribution of marijuana and child endangerment.

Michele J. Thompson, 45, Ocean Park Avenue, Bradley Beach was charged Jan. 21 with distribution of marijuana and several counts of child endangerment following an investigation by Bradley Beach Police, according to APP.com. Harold A. Sturm, 50, also of Ocean Park Avenue in Bradley Beach, was also charged.

According to Little Silver Board of Education President Christian Smith, the board "became aware of a situation in which an employee was charged with alleged criminal activity." Thompson was suspended by the district shortly after the arrest.

"Because this is a personnel matter, we cannot comment or provide details other than that the individual has been suspended while we gather information regarding the allegations," Smith said.

He added that the alleged activity did not involve any student in the Little Silver school district.

The board approved hiring Helaine Conti as a part-time replacement psychologist at its Feb. 7 meeting at $325 per day, up to three days per week, effective Feb. 8.

I find it hard to believe that we have to pay $ 325.00 a day or close to $1000.00 per week for what? Is it really necessary to have a Psychologist on premises three days a week? I think she should be paid what a teacher is paid for a days work. All of this is getting out of hand.

The patch continually deletes posts that do not agree with their backward thinking and leftist liberal agenda.

Steve if parents took time to do their job ,no we wouldn't need an on-call psychologist
commonman February 15, 2013 at 05:06 pm
lets not get crazy big deal she smokes weed how many teachers and other staff are drunks ? I feel drinkers are worse people and od more harm to society than pot smokers just because its deemed illegal doesnt make it any worse

I am shocked. I have interacted with Ms. Thompson for years and she was always very intelligent, helpful, kind, professional, and a "follow the rules" kind of person. I think we should not judge her until all the facts are in. If it were truly a clear case of drug dealing, she would have been indicted. Obviously, there is more to this story than appears in this article, which tells me she may not be guilty.
None of us obviously know all the details, but based upon my interactions with her, I would suggest we not rush to judgement.

Steve, you have no idea what you are talking about. School psychologists are a huge component of the school system. Let me educate you about two of the many jobs the psychologist fulfills:
Provide counseling to students with social, emotional, and behavioral problems. Identify learning and behavior problems of the students and then administer the battery of evaluations necessary to determine eligibility for special education services. I hope you realize the importance of these two items alone. She is responsible for 800 students well being.

Psychologists are like chiropractors. Quacks that could not finish med school. They are nothing more than another weakening of our society. Oh poor baby is being bullied call the psychologist. What a waste. That being said - I support her right to get high when she is not working.
commonman February 15, 2013 at 09:56 pm
Little s. that must be why every kid gets diagnosed with some problem have to justify their jobs another waste of my tax $$$

I happen to be a teacher and this is nonsense. Public education isn't the enemy. If you don't like it, go to private school.

You must be a Psychologist, I understand what you are saying. However I to went to school and survived like all of my classmates without a Psychologist. It's like Dentss said, if the parents did their job as parents it would not be necessary to pay this person. If you want to be a parent it comes with raising your children, not leaving it to the school Psychologist.

To Mom of special needs: She has been charged, arrested and released pending her trial date. She just has not been indicted yet. The courts are backed up. She will be indicted soon. I thought she was nice too. Now I know better. My child was one of her victims. Heartsick Mom
To commonman: Nobody cares if she gets high. She was getting 14 year olds high. To LittleS: Thank God that those 800 students are now safe. Too late for my child.

Problems that 800 parents should be addressing ,not schools

What is the Superintendent's response to the allegations and then approval to continue paying a staff member charged with a drug felony and counts of child endangerment?
Ray February 17, 2013 at 11:52 pm
Suspended with pay? Why?
Ray February 17, 2013 at 11:53 pm
Why not at least subtract the $325 a day for the replacement?
Amy Byrnes (Editor) February 18, 2013 at 12:52 am
I have no idea what happened to that comment.
Annoyed February 18, 2013 at 02:21 am
There has been no public comment from the district or superintendent beyond what was stated above.
Annoyed February 18, 2013 at 02:23 am
Re: why school needs psychologist, NJ State Dept of Education mandates that the district have one on staff.
Annoyed February 18, 2013 at 02:25 am
Although I haven't calculated or run the numbers, Ms. Thompson was on staff approximately 15 years. We taxpayers may be getting a bargain after all, at least until the next round of lawsuits start.
Annoyed February 18, 2013 at 02:26 am
There is a possibility she is a "tenured" employee. Amy are you able to confirm ?
Annoyed February 18, 2013 at 02:29 am
Yes, let's watch "ourselfs". YourSELVES. OurSELVES. You are not strengthening your conspiracy theories with your poor grasp of the English language.

No, I am not a psychologist. I'm a mom. All that I am saying is 800 students sharing one psychologist is not a luxury. In order for all students to achieve success, some may need modifications to regular classroom activities. You guys have no idea what you are talking about. But, instead of pointing out all of your ignorance again, I will educate you. Students who have special needs and are unable to receive services at their public school are often placed out of district and the school district is required by the state to pick up the tab. These private schools cost between 20-30k per year, per student. The school psychologist works to creat individual educational plans for these students to keep them in the district. Maybe if any of you had a school psychologist create an IEP for you, you would would have more than half a brain.
LittleS February 22, 2013 at 01:12 am
I guarentee there was a psychologist at your school when you attended it.
LittleS February 22, 2013 at 01:15 am
Yes, you are probably right. It's a big conspiracy. And the parents are just throwing their children into the hands of the money hungry educators and approving their child's individual educational plans because.....????? Enlighten us. You sound so smart.
Andrew Coakly February 25, 2013 at 03:45 pm
It's just weed.
Heartsick Mom February 27, 2013 at 07:21 pm
Nobody cares that she gets high. The issue is that she and her husband were getting 14 year olds high.
Heartsick Mom February 27, 2013 at 07:28 pm
You could say the same about alcohol . . . but would you be giving it to 14 year olds? Especially to kids that are not your own? Doubtful.
