Driver Hops Curb, Hits Car in Front of Red Bank Foodtown

An elderly driver hopped the curb at the Super Foodtown and entered the roadway after running over a tree.

are in the process of clearing Broad Street in Red Bank after an elderly driver apparently hopped the curb of the from the parking lot side, hit a tree, and then struck a car in oncoming traffic. 

Details of the accident, which happened at about 5:30 p.m., are not currently known. Both drivers declined immediate medical treatment at the scene, though the elderly driver did appear to have a bloody nose. 

With police blocking traffic at an already busy intersection during rush hour, traffic was backed up for a considerable portion of Broad Street going south towards the train tracks for much of the time as police and a tow truck crew attempted to clear the roadway.

Witnesses at the scene described the elderly driver as looking "panicked" as they say she accelerated at a high rate of speed into the roadway. The identities of the two drivers was not immediately known.

It is unclear if any summons were issued.
