Obituary: Adelaide H. Sickles, 81

Adelaide Hoyt Sickles, 81, whose family has run Sickles Market in Little Silver for more than 50 years, died on Dec. 31.

Sickles was married to Robert W. Sickles for nearly 60 years, according to an obituary on the Thompson Funeral Home website. She also is survived by her four children, Ginny (Finn), Bob (Leslie), Jane (Michael) and Ted and four grandchildren, Tori, Sasha, Tristan and Liam.

She graduated from Red Bank High School and completed studies at Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City, working then as a secretary at Shadow Lawn Savings and Loan in Long Branch.

The Sickles set up a stand to sell the produce they grew on their farm on Harrison Avenue off Rumson Road, according to the market's website, which eventually expanded to the year-round gourmet, produce and garden market that stands there today.

Sickles ran the market early on while her husband farmed more than 125 acres spread all over Monmouth County, according to the website.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Jan. 6, 3 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 325 Little Silver Point Road, Little Silver.
