Local World War 2 Veteran Dies

Donald Thorne dies at 85.

Donald E. Thorne, 85, of Eatontown, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013. Don was born in Middletown to Joseph and Bertha (Vanderbilt) Thorne. Don honorably served our country in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947 and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal-Japan. He was a Carpenter with Local #2250 in Red Bank until his retirement in 1989. Don was a 31 year member of the Eatontown Elks and a member of the Laborers Union #472.

He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Maureen Therese Thorne. Don is survived by his wife of 25 years, Regina Byrne-Thorne; his children, Donald Jr. of FL, Edward (Susan) of FL, Lynne (Eric) Demaree of NH, MaryJo (Jonathan) Fernald of Hillsborough, and Nancy Lynn (Richard) Wong of Eatontown; sisters-in-law, Mary Byrne of Eatontown, Patricia Wagenhals of River Edge, Laura (Paul) Henar of SI, NY, Elaine (Jim) Smith of Eatontown, and Christine (Mike) Elkow of Morganville; 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13 at the Braun Funeral Home, 106 Broad St., Eatontown, with a prayer service and Elk service during visitation. Interment will take place at the Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport. For more information, please call the funeral home at 732-542-0383.
