Local Elk, Mason Passes Away at 53

Thomas R. Mehrtens died on Nov. 19 at Monmouth Medical Center.

The following is an obituary from Damiano Funeral Home in Long Branch: 

Thomas R. Mehrtens, age 53 of Long Branch, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Jersey City, Tom was a life resident of the shore area. He was a member of Local 1804-1 International Longshoreman’s Association, Past Worshipful Master of Columbus-DaVinci-Galilei Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons (#0872) in New York City, and a member of the Long Branch B.O.P. Elks, Lodge 742. He was a parishioner of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, West End, Long Branch.

He is survived by two daughters Alaina and Eva Mehrtens of West Long Branch and their mother Lori Sayde; his parents Maureen and John Mehrtens of Whiting; his sisters and brothers in law Rose and Stuart Weissman of Saugerties of NY, Ellen and Douglas Kreil of West Caldwell; his uncle James Cashin; his nieces and nephews, John, Katie, Robin, William Justin, Allie, Collin, Matthew and Cole; and many loving cousins.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 from 4-8 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave., (corner of Third Ave.), Long Branch. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 21 at 10:30 am at St. Michael’s Church in West End, Long Branch. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations can be made to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, 555 Long Wharf Dr., New Haven, CT, 06511; to benefit severely ill children. The family invites you to send a letter of condolence, light a memorial candle or make a memorial donation by selecting the appropriate tab.
