The county had a rate of 6.9 suicides per 100,000 people for 2006-2010, according to an NJ Spotlight report.

New Jersey’s suicide rate is among the lowest in the nation, but an uptick in suicide in the state and the country in recent years has mental health professionals concerned, according to an NJ Spotlight report.

Monmouth County had 216 suicides from 2006-2010, which equates to a rate of 6.9 suicides per 100,000 people. New Jersey’s rate was 7 during that time period, according to the report.

However, the number of suicides and the rate of occurrence for the population rose in 2010 in both the state and the nation. New Jersey’s 719 suicides, or 8.2 per 100,000 population, is above the recent state average of 588 suicides, or a rate of 6.8. Some 38,364 suicides occurred in 2010, or a rate of 12.4 per 100,000 population, the American Association of Suicidology reported.
