Remember the old children’s nursery rhyme, “The teensy-weensy spider went up the waterspout…”? Well, when did we stop using the word “waterspout” and replace it with “gutter” or “down spout”? Maybe it was when waterspouts changed from being ornamental additions to the exterior of a house, and instead became generic, functional devices to handle rain water.
A case in point: today I was in Little Silver at “Boxwood Manor”, the 1929 mansion built by world champion figure skater Harold Hartshorne. You might have visited it earlier this year when it was the 2013 designer show house for the Visiting Nurse Association’s “Stately Homes by the Sea” annual fund raiser.
There are lots of wonderful things inside and outside of the 11,000 square foot Tudor mansion on the banks of the Shrewsbury River, but you may have missed the waterspouts. Every one is different, and I’d like to share a few photos with you, beginning with the waterspout with “H H”, the original owner’s initials. And ending with our little friend from the nursery rhyme.
