Hold on to HOPE

This has been a rather somber week for most of us here in Monmouth County.  Recalling the tragic day of 9/11, a devastating fire in Seaside, and the start of school for many, reminding us the lazy days of summer have come to an end.  Transitions, change and tragedy can be difficult to deal with but we must hold on to hope.

It’s through the bright eyes of my children that I try to look at the events of this past week and think, how do I explain all of this to them?   It’s not easy as I try my best to answer the questions they pose regarding the different experiences they encounter.  I hope I am giving them satisfying answers.

I find hope in adults and children; in the kids I see playing on playgrounds and at the grocery store.  I find hope in the first responders, who take care of all of us, no matter what the need is.  I find hope in the survivors who have been through so much but yet find the strength to go on.

Although a beloved skyline has changed, a new one has emerged.   The boardwalk that has been a place of fond memories, ice cream, rides, and people watching has been altered again.  Yet there is hope.  There is hope for the future; there is hope for a renewal in community.  Hope is everywhere and it is up to us, the grown-ups to find it and share it with others.  To quote Robert M. Hensel, “Whenever we begin to feel as if we can no longer go on Hope whispers in our ear to remind us we are strong.”
