The Wardell Circle of Life story, from The Way We Were

Oceanport, Wardell Circle, The Wardell Circle of Life from the 1800's to present day Oceanport.

The Wardell Circle of Life

Lots of history right in Oceanport.

Stopped in to introduce my self to Vincent De Vivo, who lives at #7 Wardell Circle, first house in from Monmouth Blvd. on the right.

I was taking picture # W-4 & W-5 the way Wardell circle is today. Told Vinny I was doing The Way We Were history blog for the Patch.

"I didn’t know I was living on historical land," Vinny said. He was surprised and delighted to know the history as I hope all of you will be.

Look at picture W-1. This is the coast line of the waterfront Wardell circle homes.

Vinnie’s house and all of his neighbors houses are just about where the clam bake in 1907 was happening.

Look at W-5 to see it today.

On the Long Branch side of the river just before you come over the bridge is Price’s Hotel (look for a blog on the hotel shortly) the bridge is the old draw bridge replaced many years ago. (Does anyone know when? Let me hear from you.) Notice there are no Marine Police or Buoys on the river in W-1.

W-2 is really interesting. This is Wardell’s Port-Au-Peck Hotel just about where Vinny and his neighbor’s house are today. Walk from the hotel down to the river just 100 feet or so (no bulk head) and you are at the spot where the clams are being cooked. I can smell and taste them as I write this. The Crab Club organized in 1878, see anyone you know?

Now we go to W-3, same 1907 clam bake looking north to the Long Branch side.

W-4 a view of today 2011 where the Clam Bakes were held back in the 1800’s. See W-1 & 2.

W-5 is a 2011 view of Wardell Circle, just to the right of the no parking sign is Vinnie’s house. Straight ahead is the general location the Wardell’s Port-Au-Peck hotel and restaurant.

Oceanport was an exciting & wonderful place then and has retained the same charm & excitement today.

Hope you enjoy The Way We Were. Please send any and all comments on how to improve this Blog & any historical stories, photos, etc. that we can use.
