Portion of Newman Springs Closed Tuesday

Closure in effect for freight line area from Tuesday at 7 p.m. through 7 p.m. Wednesday in Shrewsbury.

According to a release from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, a portion of Newman Springs Road will be closed to through traffic in Shrewsbury Tuesday night at 7 p.m. through 7 p.m. Wednesday as work is completed on a freight rail line. NJDOT officials today announced that a portion of Newman Springs Road (CR 520) in Shrewsbury Township, Monmouth County will be closed for one day to rehabilitate a Conrail freight railroad grade crossing.

Newman Springs Road will be closed to traffic at the railroad crossing between Bridge Avenue and Henry Street from 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 20 to around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21, weather dependent.

  • Motorists heading west on Newman Springs Road will take Route 35 south to Patterson Avenue, or Route 35 north to Bergen Place, to Shrewsbury Avenue to Newman Springs Road.
  • Motorists heading east on Newman Springs Road can take either Shrewsbury Road south to Patterson Avenue to Newman Springs Road or Shrewsbury Avenue north to Bergen Place to Newman Springs Road.

The detour routes were coordinated with the Shewsbury Police Department. Access will be maintained to businesses and residential properties on either side of the rail line.

NJDOT will replace the existing crossing with a new concrete freight rail crossing and repave the asphalt approaches to provide a safer and smoother driving surface. The cost of the work is $115,000. This project is part of NJDOT’s ongoing railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades or removes approximately 30 crossings each year on state and local roadways.
