Sound Off: Osama Bin Laden Dead

Little Silver and Oceanport 9/11 victims are among the many avenged by the death of the terrorist leader, announced by President Obama.

The news of Osama bin Laden's death spread rapidly across New Jersey
and Monmouth County Sunday evening, despite the late hour.

At 11:30 p.m., President Barack Obama confirmed the news. He said a small U.S. team launched the operation in Pakistan Sunday.

"Justice has been done," said Obama.

Reaction was swift and almost universal: Exultation that one of the United States' most elusive foes was dead, and dead as a result of U.S. action.

In an extraordinary address, President Obama interrupted almost every
U.S. television channel to announce the news.

While he did not provide details, the president said that the U.S. has been tracking bin Laden for months and finally located him in a residence in Pakistan. After a firefight, bin Laden was killed, with no loss of U.S. lives.

Governor Christie's office issued a statement minutes after Obama's speech, in which Christie commended the Obama administration for finally bringing bin Laden to justice.

"As the former U.S. Attorney and now Governor of New Jersey, I speak for all the families of this state who have courageously endured the unspeakable and devastating consequences of terrorism," said Christie. "There is hardly a life that has gone untouched in New Jersey by the horrifying assault on American soil that took place on September 11th and today, after years of waiting, justice has finally been delivered."

Among those killed on September 11th were the following Little Silver and Oceanport residents: Michael G. Arczynski, 45; Timothy Betterly, 42; Karl Trumbull Smith, 44; James J. Straine Jr., 36.

"While our fight against terrorism continues," said Christie. "Osama bin Laden's reign of terror has come to an end, sending a clear signal that even in the face of immeasurable horror, democracy and freedom continue to prevail."
