Monmouth Park aid bill unsigned by Gov. Christie

What's happening in or around Little Silver and Oceanport on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day has always provided a much-needed reprieve from the unending monotony of a January work and school schedule. But all good things must come to an end. So before you face the , extend your three-day weekend a few minutes longer by reading 5 Things You Need to Know:

1.) Daily Racing Form is reporting that “Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey has not yet indicated whether he will sign .”

“Dennis Drazin, the chairman of the New Jersey Racing Commission, said he would not comment on the bill on Wednesday because of uncertainty over whether Christie would sign the legislation,” according to DRF.com. “Officials in Christie’s press office did not return phone calls.”

2.) Maple Place School students have taken an anti-bullying pledge as part of a grassroots effort developed by twelve local Girls Scouts. Click here for the full story.

3.) Due to the Jan. 11 snowstorm, last week’s Little Silver Planning Board meeting has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at Borough Hall. The Little Silver Board of Health will also meet this evening at 7:30 p.m.

4.) At 3:45 p.m. the Red Bank Regional boys basketball team will play a home game against Holmdel High School, and Shore Regional will face off with Rumson-Fair Haven at SRHS. Shore will also take on Asbury Park in a wrestling match scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in West Long Branch.

5.) 180 Turning Lives Around (180), a private nonprofit organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual violence, is currently accepting applications for Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) volunteers.

DVRT requirements dictate that all applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have access to transportation, possess a valid driver’s license, be willing to serve on an on-call shift basis, participate in an interview process, submit to background investigations and fingerprinting, and successfully complete the mandatory training.
