UPDATE 7PM: Little Silver Declares State of Emergency

Evacuations still voluntary, Army Corps of Engineers releases list of flood-prone streets, Red Bank Regional is not a shelter.

A message from the borough of Little Silver, as posted on the borough website Aug. 27:

At this time Red Bank Regional High School is NOT set up as a Shelter or Reception Point. Evacuating residents should seek shelter with family or friends. Public shelters at Wall HS, Holmdel HS and Colts Neck HS should be utilized as a last resort.  
 
Little Silver Residents looking to move their vehicles to a higher ground may park vehicles at the Red Bank Regional HS parking lot or the Little Silver Train Station lot off of Ayers Ln. Parking Enforcement has been suspended in these lots.  
 
Little Silver Residents are asked to remove vehicles from roadways to allow access for Emergency Vehicles.

A Local State of Emergency has been declared by the Governing Body. Hurricane Irene will hit this area as a Category 1 storm. Residents in low lying areas are requested to leave the area for higher ground and seek shelter with relatives or friends. 
 
Flood predictions prepared by the Army Corps of Engineers indicate that the following roads WILL flood:  
 
South end of Oakes Rd 
Mitchell Place 
Seven Bridge Rd south of Pine Drive 
Holly Tree Lane area 
Point Road east of Westwood Rd 
Lippincott Rd 
Winding Way 
Borden Place 
Paag Lane and Paag Circle 
Breezy Point  
Alwin Terrace  
Carriage House Ln 
Rivers Edge Drive 
 
SEVERE flooding is expected on these streets and residents are requested to leave this area and seek shelter with relatives or friends to higher ground  
 
During the storm there will be NO rescue operations.

Report power outages to Jersey Central Power and Light:

  • Report downed wires immediately to JCP&L or local police or fire department.  Never go near a downed power line, even if you think it's no longer carrying electricity.
  • Don't try to remove trees or tree limbs from power lines.  Wait for utility crews to arrive.

Report gas leaks to N.J. Natural Gas:

800-427-5325

  • If you smell natural gas, leave the premises immediately and call 800-GAS-LEAK (800-427-5325) from a safe location.
  • Should water get into your furnace and/or water heater due to flooding, or if your natural gas meter is damaged by fallen debris or under water, call 800-GAS-LEAK.
  • In the event of an evacuation, DO NOT turn off the natural gas service to your home or business.

COUNTY INFORMATION ON STORM PREPARATION

Residents living in coastal and low-lying areas are urged to evacuate voluntarily, especially those who have experienced flooding before.

The county has established shelters in Holmdel High School, 36 Crawford’s Corner Rd., Holmdel, and Wall High School, 1630 18th Avenue, Wall. The shelters will open at 5 p.m. Friday, August 26.  No pets are permitted.

(Editor's Note: Though the borough website states there will be no pets allowed, there is a pet shelter set up at Holmdel High School as well as , the vocational academy located next to .)

Recommended items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers
