Visions of World War II valor remembered in Middletown.

In May, veterans of the World War II Battle of the Bulge gathered in Middletown for a rededication of the Cpl. Horace "Bud" Thorne monumnent at Thorne Middle School, named after the vet. On Thursday, May 26,  The Battle of the Bulge Monument that was installed at Fort Monmouth in May of 2001 was relocated and rededicated at Thorne Middle School. The school's namesake, Cpl. Horace "Bud" Thorne, died in that battle and received a Congressional Medal of Honor for his valorous service. 

Thorne's sister, Edith T. Nowels, was an organizer of the event along with school and township officials.

The event was attended by the full student body, foreign dignitaries, including the Consul Generals of Belgium and Luxembourg and the Deputy Military Advisor of Belgium.

Most noteworthy of all, more than 80 surviving members of the Battle of the Bulge and other conflicts of World War II were present in an era when many of the vets known as the patriarchs of "The Greatest Generation" are quickly becoming a dying breed.
