Fort News: No FMERA Meeting This Month

Recovery from Sandy, temporary housing still in works.

The Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA) has canceled it's board meeting scheduled for Nov. 19.

FMERA staff didn't offer a reason for the cancellation but the authority has been busy with meetings with the state, FEMA and local officials as they try to piece together a plan for long-term temporary housing at the fort for Monmouth and Ocean county residents displaced by Sandy.

The Army's caretaker workforce is busy with clean-up efforts at Fort Monmouth where according to FMERA, one third of its 1,126 acres were flooded in October's superstorm.

Shortly after the storm FMERA issued this statement:

The Fort experienced flooding upwards of 2 ft on parts of the eastern-most portion of the Fort, east of Oceanport Avenue.  The Army, Caretaker, and FMERA offices were flooded.  Army and FMERA have since relocated to Russell Hall on the west side of Oceanport Avenue, and both offices are now up and running in the new location.  Other portions of the Fort experienced minor flooding from drainage paths and river tributaries, but this was minor and did not affect ongoing operations.

Despite damage from two feet of flood water, redevelopers say the former Fort Monmouth marina will be on the market soon.

The Army-owned marina in Oceanport was slated to be put on the market in December.

Set as one of the first properties to be sold by the Army, slated by the end of this year. Bruce Steadman, executive director for FMERA, said prior to Sandy that he expected to put out a request for offers to purchase on the marina and other phase one properties in December.

When Patch questioned how the flooding might impact this this, a FMERA rep said:

There is no impact to its future sale, and we expect to issue the RFOTP soon.  Given our focus on assisting storm victims at this time, there will be a minor delay, but again, the flooding has no impact on us moving forward with the RFOTP.

The next FMERA Board will be on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the Eatontown Municipal Building, 47 Broad St., Eatontown at 7 p.m. A copy of the proposed agenda can be found 48 hours prior to the meeting at: www.nj.gov/fmera.
