Flakes Possible Saturday Night As Storm Hits Shore

Meteorologists say coast won't get hit with as much snow as north Jersey, but could see flurries.

An autumn storm packing winter power is tracking up the east coast, and while Ocean and Monmouth counties are expected to get mostly rain, the shore may see a few snow flurries Saturday night.

Meteorologist Valerie Meola of the National Weather Service's Mount Holly office said a nor'easter-like system will hit the area before 6 a.m. Saturday.

"In most coastal areas, we'll see rain," she said, "but there may be a few flakes that mix in," especially as temperatures drop into the low 30s Saturday night.

The NWS has also issued a coastal flood advisory for the area Saturday, as storm conditions may combine with unusually high tides to push water into low-lying areas along New Jersey's bays and oceanfront.

The same storm may dump up to a few inches of heavy, wet snow in northern New Jersey, Meola said, which could become a problem as it weighs down tree branches – especially those that still have their leaves – and power lines. New York, central Pennsylvania and even the Appalachians could see more significant accumulation, she said.

Unless it snows heavily, she said, lingering ground warmth should keep New Jersey's roads mostly clear.

Ocean warmth and plenty of preceding rain means accumulation is unlikely directly along the ocean. But Meola said October snow on the shore isn't unheard of.

The last time Atlantic City saw any flakes before November was in 2008, she said, when a major storm hit the eastern U.S. and dropped 12 to 14 inches of snow in higher elevations in Pennsylvania. But seeing the white stuff stick would be a first. "Atlantic City has never had measurable snowfall in October," she said.

The foul weather is expected to clear up late Saturday, Meola said, bringing on a clear, sunny Sunday with highs in the low 50s.
