Five Things To Know Today, June 2

Kite Weather, Hail To The Chief, Epic Fail, Register Now For Summer Fun, Let's Hear It For Our Locals

We're Not In Kansas Anymore, Toto

Happy to report today no one in Little Silver or Oceanport lost a roof due to a tornado or meteor-sized hail Wednesday. We got pelted by a few ping pong ball sized chunks of ice, but that was the worst of it, thankfully.

Today will be much nicer, and we will finally get a break from the heatwave (figures, I just installed my air conditioners). Not only will we have sunny skies, but it will be a little cooler, according to the National Weather Service. High will be near 77, dropping down to 54 in the evening.

If you've got a kite, this afternoon should provide you with favorable conditions to fly it, as gusts during the day will blow from the north at 14 to 20 mph.

Hail To The Chief

Daniel Shaffery took over duties as Little Silver's top cop yesterday, June 1, though the public swearing in was held off until June 13. Shaffery says even that date is questionable, as he'll be out of state at that time. Despite the delay in formalities, Shaffery is now head of the police force in Little Silver, as former chief Shannon Giblin has retired.

Robbery, Not

Try to rob a bank and they're going to find you, especially if you've already been arrested on the day you attempt it.

Officials at the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said yesterday that Cheung Lee, 41, of Avenel, N.J., has been caught and connected to the attempted robbery of the Wells Fargo on Prospect Avenue in Little Silver on Tuesday, May 31.

East Windsor police said Lee called 911 there at 12:51 p.m. Tuesday and told them a large building was going to be destroyed. He was charged with false public alarm and improper use of the 911 system, then released on 10 percent of $5,000 bail and pending court action.

Later in the day, he arrived at the Little Silver bank and tried to rob it, but failed. More details on that to come later today.
