Lifeguards also asked bathers to leave water after stingray sighting

Bathers were evacuated from the ocean near Pier Village just after 1 p.m. because of shark sighting.

Long Branch Beach Manager Danny George said a 4-foot brown shark was spotted in the water at 1:15 p.m. and swimmers were immediately evacuated from the water.

At 2 p.m., George said bathers were allowed back in the water. George said brown sharks, also known as sandbar sharks, are not known to be dangerous and that they are not known to attack people.
