5 Things You Need to Know Today in Little Silver and Oceanport: May 1

Let's look for the silver lining of this rainy day: we can catch an opera or a planning board meeting or stay home and wipe the gunk out of the refrigerator.

Golden opportunity: You know how you've been meaning to wipe out the inside of your refrigerator after your 9-year old didn't screw the top onto the liter bottle of Coke that slowly emptied into the vegetable drawer over the weekend? Good news: there's an 80-percent chance of rain today so you'll be stuck inside anyway. There's rain in the forecast for most of the week, so you'll have plenty of time to wipe all that dog hair off the side of your couch and tackle the disturbing number of shopping bags you've been hoarding in your coat closet before the sun comes back out again.

Parenting 101: Feeling like you could use a little Parenting 101? A free 14-week educational program for parents, grandparents, guardians and their children, ages 12 - 14 will be offered at Monmouth Cares in West Long Branch beginnning next Tuesday, May 8. The Strengthening Families education program will teach participants how to improve communication skills, develop effective conflict resolution techniques, set goals and establish family meetings. For more information, or to register to attend, please contact Alyson Zilai, Barnabas Health Institute for Prevention, at 732-942-5753 or azilai@barnabashealth.org.

Plan on it: The Planning Board will meet Tuesday night at 7:00. On the agenda, besides a proposed second-story addition and a basketball court, is the subdivision application for Fox Hill by Martelli Builders.

Figaro, Figaro, Figaro: Not up for lots of talk of setbacks and variances? Perhaps you'd be interested in the pair of operas to be presented by vocal majors tonight. The productions are the first full-scale operas presented at the high school and will be reprised Wednesday night.

Those summer, nights: Hard to believe, but organizers are already starting to plan for 36th Summer's End Festival on Sept. 8. The event has plenty of sponsorship opportunities, from major sponsors -- at $1,000, $2,500 and $10,000 -- to Community sponsors for $$250 and $500. It's a great way to promote your business or organization while supporting a favorite community event. Click here for details.
