5 Things You Need to Know Today in Little Silver and Oceanport: June 4

Markham's art show and book fair are tonight, Oceanport's Hook & Ladder is rekindling its Explorer Program and, holy crow, only 10 days left of school.

Sun Salutation: Good thing we had all that sunshine this weekend (barring that freaky storm that blew through Sunday afternoon), because we won't be seeing much of the sun this week. Expect a chance of showers and thunderstorms today with temperatures around 66 degrees and a similar weather scerario for Tuesday as well. Think of it as a great opportunity to regroup after all of the weekend's activities.

Spotted on Facebook: From Second Asst. Chief Joseph Wolf, "To Parents of Oceanport children ages 14-20 ... If your son or daughter would like to meet new friends, give back to the community, and try their hands at Firefighting, The Oceanport Fire Department is re-establishing its Explorer Program for future Firefighters in Oceanport. We are looking for teens that would like to see what firefighting is all about. We will train then in basic Firefighting skills, community pride, and most of all teamwork. If you have a son/daughter that would be interesting please contact me. If you as a parent would like to find out more about this program please feel free to contact me. I will be setting up a first night with the Boy Scouts who the program is through somewhere towards the end of June, and will post it for any parent/ teen who may be interested in this program."

Art & Books: Tonight is a twofer event at Markham Place in Little Silver from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., allowing parents to see what the middle school kids have been working on all year in their art classes as part of the annual Markham Art Show and squeeze in a little summer reading shopping spree at the Spring Book Fair down the hall in the media center. As an added bonus, the String Chamber Ensemble will be performing in the courtyard at 6:45 p.m. and the Jazz Band will perform on stage at 7:30 p.m.

The Countdown: If you're counting, whether in anticipation or dread, you know that as of today, there are -- give or take depending on where your kids are -- approximately nine or 10 days left of school. I need to run and get a paper bag to breathe into, I'm feeling dizzy.

Swim to the Side: A friend sent us this public service announcement video on the dangers of rip tides. In light of the recent alleged drowning of the teen age boy in Long Branch, it might not be a bad idea to watch the one-minute video with your kids. Check out the YouTube video to the right of this article.
