5 Things You Need to Know Today: Friday, March 30

A hodgepodge of events and useful information for folks living in Oceanport and Little Silver.

Rain date: You guys, I'm bummed. I had marked Saturday as the day that the kids and I would finally tackle the garage, which has retained the same chaotic vibe we left it in in August when we cleared everything out of the yard in preparation for the hurricane. Seven months later, all those pool rafts are now submerged under snow shovels, scooters and a tree's worth of dead leaves. So naturally, Friday's weather forecast is a beauty: sunny skies, much calmer winds and temperatures somewhere in the mid-50s, according to the National Weather Service. Then, some time after midnight, the rain sets in and carries through Saturday into Sunday. Perhaps this is a sign from the universe that I should spend the day catching up on missed episodes of Shameless instead. How convenient.

Scrambled eggs: Saturday's potentially windy weather might also affect both borough's scheduled egg hunts. Here's the deal: annual Egg Scramble will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Community Center. Oceanport's rain date is the following Saturday, Aprill 7. will hold the borough's annual Egg Hunt on Saturday as well at 1 p.m., meeting at the Markham gazebo. The rain date for Little Silver is Sunday at 1 p.m. As an added bonus, the Easter Bunny will be available for photo ops at 12:30 p.m.

Clean living: fifth grade class will celebrate their completion of the DARE program with a graduation ceremony on Friday starting at 1:30 p.m. I'll see you there.

Bag it: Now that we're all getting in that spring cleaning state of mind, and considering the weekend's wet forecast, perhaps we should focus on the bulging drawers and closets throughout our houses. 8th grade is holding a used clothing collection that would be a great cause to donate all those old leggings to. Here's the schedule:

  • Friday, March 30 from 3pm - 7pm
  • Saturday, March 31 from noon - 5pm
  • Sunday, April 1 from noon - 5pm
  • Monday, April 2 from 3pm - 7pm

For the 3rd consecutive year Grocery Bags will be transformed into imaginative works of art bearing powerful environmental messages thanks to the creative work of over 400 students. On April 8th the children will present their bags to Bob Sickles at the Point Road School. As a “thank you”, Mr. Sickles will give each child a lettuce seedling in a recyclable pot and transplant the seedlings in special planters into the school’s courtyard. Lookout for the beautifully decorated Grocery Bags to be displayed this weekend throughout the store!
