Database Provides Information on 31,000 Flood and Salvage-Titled Vehicles

The state urges customers to consult the database before buying a car

The State Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) are urging all customers to consult their database of flood and salvage-titled vehicles before purchasing a car. That database now provides information on 31,000 such vehicles, the State MVC announced on Wednesday. It isn't illegal to sell vehicles with flood or salvaged titles. However, there are specific requirements that ensure potential purchasers are aware of the status of such vehicles, according to the MVC. “Damage sustained by vehicles must be disclosed to prospective buyers,” Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said. “We will hold car dealers accountable for violating our Consumer Fraud Act if they fail to make such disclosures.” The database was …

FMERA Board Taking Steps To Bring Veterans Community to Fort Monmouth

Eatontown parcel will be on market soon

A change to the original redevelopment plan for Fort Monmouth will allow an Eatontown parcel to become a veterans community. At its May meeting, The Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA) board made Fort Monmouth Parcel V1 available through the request for offers to purchase (RFOTP) process. The 10-acre parcel is located along Alexander Avenue in Eatontown and is scheduled to be built into a veterans community. The community will provide permanent housing and assistance for homeless veterans. There may be as many as 10,000 to 20,000 homeless veterans living in New Jersey, and upwards of 500 in Monmouth County alone, according to a FMERA newsletter. “FMERA believes that a veterans community project situated on Parcel V-I …

Developer Looking to Rezone Old Orchard Country Club

Plan would call for residential and commercial buildings

A developer is looking to rezone Old Orchard Country Club, a golf course which borders Eatontown, Oceanport and West Long Branch. National Realty & Development Corp. (NRDC) is looking to rezone the 135-acre property into a mixture of residential and commercial uses. The property is currently zoned as "park/open space" with an overlay that allows 32,000 square foot lots. The change, which would have to be approved by the Eatontown Council before an application would be heard by the planning board, would allow the developer to build 175 units in a 55 and over community on one side of the golf course. The portion of the property which fronts on Route 36, next to the Motor Vehicle Commission, would be slated for a 450,000-square-foot retail …

Introduced Oceanport Budget Shows No Tax Increase

No tax increase for third consecutive year

Oceanport residents will not be seeing an increase in their tax bills if the borough's 2013 municipal budget is adopted next month. The Oceanport Council introduced the 2013 municipal budget last week and it calls for a tax rate of 50.8 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, for the third straight year. The budget totals $9.4 million, with a tax levy of $5,182,280, which is a $152,000 decrease from 2012. A public hearing on the budget will be held during the June 6 Oceanport Council meeting.

Monmouth Park Ready If Sports Betting in New Jersey is Approved

William Hill hired as Monmouth Park's sports betting provider

If sports betting becomes legalized in New Jersey, Monmouth Park says it is ready to bring it to the Oceanport racetrack. Monmouth Park has teamed with William Hill, a sports betting company, for a long-term agreement to become the racetrack's exclusive sports betting provider. "We are looking forward to a long and successful partnership with Monmouth Park," William Hill US CEO Joe Asher said during a press conference on Tuesday. Should sports betting become legal under federal law, William Hill will develop a Las Vegas-style sports book at Monmouth Park once New Jersey gaming regulatory authorities approve of the plan. The state enacted a law legalizing sports betting in 2012 following a voter referendum that passed by a 2-to-1 margin. …

Christie Underwent Weight Loss Surgery In February

Governor tells New York Post that Lap-Band procedure was done at the urging of his family. An NYU doctor made house calls to Christie's Mendham home to not draw attention to the surgery.

Gov. Chris Christie underwent stomach-shrinking Lap-Band surgery in February, he confirmed to the New York Post on Monday night while refuting speculation that he was slimming down for a White House run in 2016.    Christie quietly had the Lap-Band -- or laparoscopic adjustable gastric binding -- procedure done in a New York hospital, telling the paper that he agreed to the surgery at the urging of his family after turning 50 in September. The governor insisted that the Lap-Band was not inserted to help him lose weight in the run-up to 2016. "I know it sounds crazy to say that running for president is minor, but in the grand scheme of things, it was looking at Mary Pat and the kids and going, 'I have to do this for them, even if I don’t …
