Covering Athletics, Academics, and Everything Else Happening at Red Bank Regional High School. Go Bucs!
Red Bank Regional High School's football season opened Saturday with high expectations. Seniors who, as freshmen, went undefeated, led the team onto the field, and the crowd was treated to a beautiful rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" by senior Breyonna Clark.        But the game ended on a realistic, if somber, note. Red Bank Catholic won 47-0 and, as RBR Coach Nick Giglio observed afterward, "showed why they are the best team on the Shore." The Bucs played without senior standout Dillon Stambaugh, who likely would have helped contain the score. But at the end of the day, RBR was …
Expect to find a few candidates for the Red Bank Regional High School Board of Education on your ballots in Little Silver, Red Bank and Shrewsbury this November, and possibly (but improbably) a district budget vote. The regional high school district's board voted Wednesday to move its board elections from April to November in response to a new law enacted by Gov. Christie two weeks ago. The new law also allows schools to bypass a budget vote if their budget raises the tax levy by less than two percent. The move passed unanimously, with little discussion on the board. "We've done our homework …
Although they are rivals on the basketball court, the girls’ teams at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School and Red Bank Regional High School have joined forces to raise funds for breast cancer research. On Thursday, February 2, the teams from both schools will face off in a “Pink Out” basketball game, also known as “Shoot for a Cure.” Spectators are encouraged to dress in pink, and prizes will be awarded for “best-dressed pink fan” and “best-dressed pink group.” Pink t-shirts and other pink items will be available for sale at the game, with all proceeds being donated to the Jacqueline M. …
Red Bank Regional High School (RBR) operates four-year, state-approved vocational programs to prepare students for college study and careers in engineering, finance, and informational technology, all areas very key to our national growth and prosperity.  These programs function as smaller learning communities within the high school and were created in affiliation with national organizations including The National Academy Foundation. The programs are also advised by a board of local community business professionals. Academy students regularly participate in regional and national competitions …
Red Bank Regional High School students Alexandra Collado of Shrewsbury and Jared Katzman of Little Silver will be attending Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities, respectively, as they were recently accepted through the early decision process.  Collado was drawn to Johns Hopkins for its premier biomedical engineering program. “From the time I was a little girl, I always loved to build and invent. I also thought I would like to be doctor. I combined the two and entered RBR’s pre-engineering program with the goal of becoming a bioengineer someday," Collado said. Katzman was attracted to Yale’s …
Red Bank Regional (6-5-1, 4-1-1 Shore "D") put up a good fight but was unable to stop the division-leading St. Rose Frozen Roses (14-2-0, 7-2-0 Shore "D") who defeated them 4-2 when the two teams clashed on the ice at Jersey Shore Arena in Wall Friday evening. The Bucs only had nine players in the game due to illness and injuries. F Drue Amato showed symptoms of mono and F Josh Suboyo, F Tim Vilardi and D Sam Maraschio were held out of the lineup with concussions, causing Red Bank to send out just two forward lines and three defenders. Pat McKerry scored for St. Rose near the end of the first…
Editor's Note: Special thanks to RBR parent Igor Rjedkin for the use of the photos in the gallery above. All statistics are through 10 games. RECORD 5-4-1 overall, 4-0-1 Shore Conference "D" DivisionRanked 84 among NJ high school teams by NJPowerRanking.com After losing the first three games of the season to tougher "C" division opponents Toms River East, Manasquan and Rumson-Fair Haven, the Bucs dropped down to games against their own "D" division opponents and fared better, defeating Marlboro, Ocean (twice) and Jackson Liberty. RBR visited Parsippany over the holiday break and beat them 4-3…
Red Bank Regional’s culinary arts students were delighted to share their skills and service for Soul Kitchen in Red Bank this past holiday season. The students took a field trip from their usual high school culinary class to dice and chop under the direction of Executive Chef Zeet Peabody. Soul Kitchen serves up home-style three course meals every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in this community kitchen. Many of RBR’s students are from the Red Bank area, where Soul Kitchen is located. “We got a lot done and prepared such dishes as butternut squash and string beans under Chef Zeet’s direction…
Red Bank Regional High School Visual and Performing Art (VPA) students Matt Rosen, Little Silver and Alex LaRocca, Shrewsbury, have both gained placements in the prestigious Region II Symphonic music groups. Rosen, a sophomore, will play the contra clarinet in the Wind Ensemble while LaRocca, a junior, will play the double bass for the Symphonic Orchestra. This is Rosen’s second year making the Region II Symphonic Band. He plays a variety of woodwind instruments and actually auditioned on three instruments (the maximum allowed by the competition) and won all three placements as first chair …
Red Bank teens went looking for a place where they could hang out, a place that was not only safe, but one they could call their own. When they couldn’t find it they did the next best thing, they created their own. Enter the Buc Room. Located on the second floor at the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County in Red Bank, the teens-only lounge is a dedicated spot complete with a Red Bank Regional High School paint theme, couches and entertainment system. It’s a place for teens, by teens. “This was us coming together, working to say we’re going to do something together,” 17-year-old Yasin …
Red Bank Regional High School Principal Risa Clay, of Tinton Falls, was recently honored by the Greater Red Bank N.A.A.C.P. with their Education Award at their 2011 Freedom Fund Luncheon held on Dec. 3 at Gibbs Hall in Tinton Falls. Clay has served as the RBR principal for the past two years, and was the assistant principal prior to her promotion. She began her distinguished career at RBR 19 years ago as its student assistant counselor. She founded The SOURCE, RBR’s school-based youth services program twelve years ago and served as its first director. The SOURCE, recognized as a best …
Before school let out for the holidays, Red Bank Regional’s youngest students -- The Little Bucs -- took a field trip down the hall to the dance studio. There they were treated to a special presentation of the A Little Nutcracker performed by RBR’s dance elective students. RBR Dance Instructor Dorianne Murray narrated the story of Clara who falls asleep on a wintery Christmas Eve after receiving the gift of a nutcracker. In her dreams the nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince who takes her to the land of sweets ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Little Bucs were entertained by …
The Red Bank Regional Buccaneers (3-3, 3-0 Shore "D") defeated the Marlboro Mustangs (1-5, 0-2 Shore "D") 4-1 when the teams tussled at Jersey Shore Arena in Wall on Tuesday evening. Red Bank notched their third straight victory with the win over Marlboro, the defending Dowd Cup champions. The Dowd Cup is a tournament of teams that play in the Shore Conference's lower "C" and "D" divisions. Though RBR lost their first three games of the season to quicker "C" division teams (Toms River East, Manasquan, Rumson-Fair Haven), those games have appeared to put some pep in their step entering …
Unable to play football after getting hit by a car while he was riding his bicycle home from volunteering over the summer, Little Silver resident and Red Bank Regional High School (RBR) sophomore Ryan Lloyd stuck close to his team to root them on and became the recipient of the New Jersey Football Officials Association's Unsung Hero Award at the recent RBR Athletic Awards Night. "Very often a football player's contribution to his team cannot be measured solely by touchdowns scored, yards gained and tackles made. Sometimes a certain player's dedication and efforts serves as an immeasurable …
The Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs (3-0) defeated the Red Bank Regional Buccaneers (0-3) by a score of 4-1 in a high school hockey matchup at Red Bank Armory Ice Complex Saturday. The Bulldogs took control of the puck early in the game, pounding RBR goalie Charlie Fox with 16 shots in the first period. Fox stepped up and stopped them all, but the Bucs struggled to get the puck out of their zone long enough to generate any scoring chances. RFH kept the Bucs from getting a single shot on goalie Sam Adkinson in the first. It was exactly what Rumson-Fair Haven Coach Chris McCaffery was looking for …
For the past ten years, the Red Bank Regional High School, through its Education Foundation, has observed a warm tradition of honoring its most distinguished alumni. We are hoping that members of the community may know of someone truly worthy of this honor and may chose to nominate that person for distinguished alumni consideration. The criterion for submission is that the nominee had graduated from Red Bank Regional at least 15 years ago or from its predecessor, Red Bank High School. Nominees should be role models to our young people and have distinguished themselves in their careers (making…
The Toms River East Raiders (1-0) came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Red Bank Regional Buccaneers (0-1) by a score of 5-4 as both teams opened their seasons Saturday as the Red Bank Armory Ice Complex. Red Bank put together an early lead as junior Joe Franco scored twice in the first and once in the second for the first hat trick of the season. "The first goal was right off the faceoff, so I just got a kind of lucky bounce through the kid's legs," said Franco, assisted by Sam Marascio on the play. "The second one was on a breakaway, I faked a shot with my backhand and it went right in…
A co-ed crew of sailors from Red Bank Regional has recently made significant headway for their high school program with strong showings in regional and local competitions. The Bucs finished second among their New Jersey peers and 11th out of 18 schools at the Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association (MASSA) Fall Championships held at The Stony Brook School’s sailing club in Port Jefferson, NY and took first at the New Jersey Interscholastic Sailing League's regatta in Brant Beach, NJ (near Manahawkin) last month. Coach John Garth said the MASSA finish was significant because it showed that…
On Thursday morning at Red Bank Regional, the Bucs will do battle with the Long Branch Green Wave in their traditional Thanksgiving football game, and fans of either team can get in for free by bringing a non-perishable food item. The RBR Athletic Department and the RBR National Honor Society are sponsoring the Football Food Drive. Collected items will be brought to the Salvation Army of Red Bank. The Red Bank Salvation Army reports that while donations are down this year, requests for assistance have increased about 30 percent since 2010. The Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties reports …
In a matter of only seven months, another team from Red Bank Regional has earned the highest prestige in a national technology competition, joining the ranks of CyberPatriot III champs Team Mantrap. Team Zettabyte, formed by Alec Jasanovsky (Neptune City), Emily Wicki and Michael Terpak (Union Beach), recently outwitted 150 teams from across the country in NYU Poly's High School Cyberforensics Challenge, the finals of which were held last weekend at the school's Brooklyn MetroTech Center. Every year the competition comes up with a fictional celebrity murder mystery for students to solve, and …
