The annual event, organized by the LSBPA, runs through Saturday.
Looking for a new pair of flip flops, a good beach read or just an excuse to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather? You can cross all those items off your to-do list with a visit to the Little Silver Sidewalk Sale that runs through Saturday throughout the downtown area. Check out the great selection of new and nearly-new book titles at the library's tent in front of borough hall; the great selection of merchandise put out by the Women's Exchange, Byford & Mills and the Family Pharmacy; or stop by and say "hello" to the folks from Two River Realty. Don't forget to come by and say "howdy" to your Patch editor and sales rep between noon and 2 p.m. on Friday. We'll be holding down the fort in front of the Women's Exchange and have some …

Megacycle, a new spin center in Shrewsbury, was born out of a need to find a new way to workout.
Megan Gridley was faced with a dilemma. Running was out. The two knee surgeries in the same year saw to that. Her career as she knew it, that was gone too. The decades spent working as a personal trainer and leading workout classes every day in the gym were just a memory, like so much articular cartilage. At 43, with two kids and a loving husband at home - and daily knee pain a reminder of the toll high-impact exercise has on your body - Gridley could have packed it in. Instead, she opened a gym of her own and is back leading workout classes as often as four times a day. Megacycle is an indoor cycling studio on Broad Street in Shrewsbury. When it came to finding an exercise supplement to running, Gridley said cycling and spin classes were …

The Ocean Avenue burger joint set to open mid-July.
Anthony Cafaro comes from a New York family of Italian restauranteurs. But when this Rumson resident decided to leave Wall Street behind, it wasn't going to be so he could open a parm house. "This area doesn't need an Italian restaurant," Cafaro told Patch last week, outside an empty storefront on Ocean Avenue in Sea Bright where the windows are papered with the smiley faced logo of his new venture, Kind Burger. He pointed out Anjelica's next door, where he just celebrated his son's christening and called the upscale eatery "fantastic." But, he said, "the working man needs a place to come and eat." On cue, two working men, one after another, walked past the storefront, and asked, "Hey man, when are you opening?" He told them, "This summer…

Know anyone doing this in Little Silver or Oceanport?
Jennifer Swyer comes from a family of cooks, her mom, her dad, her brother, her grandmother, all experts at crafting fine home cooked meals. "And we were always trying to out do each other," she said. After she got married and started a family, Swyer used her gifts to host sitdown dinners for 25 and big holiday parties with all home cooked food. For years her friends and family pushed her to turn her love for food into a business. Finally, last Christmas Swyer relented and started up Chloe's Kitchen, cooking and delivering family style comfort meals to residents in the Rumson area. Swyer's daughter Chloe named the business which her mom does at a near by commercial kitchen where she rents space, while she attends Fair Haven Academy. Swyer …

A state legislative committee approved a bill this week that would bar the practice.
Can an employer force you to reveal your Facebook or other social media password as a condition for getting hired or keeping your job? That issue began to get some attention in March after a statistician in New York reported that during an interview with a potential employer, the woman interviewing him had searched for his Facebook and, upon discovering that it was private, asked him for the password. The statistician, Justin Bassett, refused and left the interview according to the Associated Press. But the story brought to light other instances where employers have sought similar access to social media accounts, and have led several states to consider legislation to ban the practice. California's assembly voted Thursday to approve such …
Post photos and videos to show off what you're growing.
Nike might want you to just do it, but Sickles Market would rather see you grow it. The Little Silver nursery-market-gift emporium is putting a call out to Patch readers to show off what they're growing this spring. All next week, folks can post photos and/or videos on Patch of what they're growing or why they're growing it. Readers can also use other social media outlets, but make sure to use the hash tag #growsomething. The social media campaign, from May 14 though May 18, is the creation of Greenhouse Grower’s “Grow Initiative” campaign. Check out a video that Sickles Market, a century old gourmet food market and garden center in Little Silver, created for the campaign.
A quick peak inside the Broad Street building that will house Char restaurant.
In just a few months, the image you see above of a gutted-out building, torn down to the studs and brick, with debris littering the concrete floor, will be home to Red Bank's hottest and hippest new restaurant, Char Steakhouse. Just last February, the owners behind the plan to bring Char to Red Bank won site plan approval from the borough's Planning Board. The approval came with a couple of variances, most of them having to do with the modern style and design - both inside and outside of the building - developed by Cahill Studio. While work is underway, it's clear they've got a ways to go if they want to meet their scheduled September opening. The first step, however, is tearing it back down so it can be built back up. On a beautiful day, …

The weather lately has been unpredictable but you can count on board of ed meetings tonight and and upcoming Spring Banquet at RBR.
Be prepared: Lately, it seems that we need to be prepared for a little bit of everything in the weather department. Take yesterday, which started cool and soggy and by the late afternoon, I was cursing the added weight of my raincoat and that I had left my sunglasses on my kitchen table. According to the National Weather Service, Thursday's outlook seems fairly similar with a 30 percent chance of rain earlier in the morning and then after 2 p.m. My advice: channel your inner scout and be prepared. I am a poet, and I did not know it: I'm fairly certain that the world would be a better place if we communicated in metered verse. Take this announcement for an upcoming fifth annual tea party for first and second grade girls at at the SSYC: The …

Ann Tardy, cyclist, entrepreneur and "exhausting" individual will kick off her next adventure Friday at Bike Haven. Stop by and you might win an iPad.
When you meet Ann Tardy, you will have no doubt that she is up for the challenge of a six week, 70-mile-a-day bike tour. Bubbly and genuine, Tardy talks not just with her hands, but with her whole body, as she shifts her weight from foot to foot with a little hop, reliving stories of the people she met the last time she jumped on a bike for a few thousand miles for what she has dubbed, the Moxie Ride. The last time it was from California to New Jersey to combine a lifelong dream of cross country cycling and a business built on motivating managers. Life Moxie is Tardy's company that teaches business leaders how to mentor their employees - through Tardy's own software, books and speaking engagements. She first hit the road in search of …

Bravo for a new eatery that's not pizza and subs! I couldn't agree more with his statement, "This area doesn't need an Italian restaurant." Been saying that for years. Anthony, any chance you guys will have a whole grain bun or toast as a bread choice?   more ›
