Todd Akin and Extreme Right Threaten the Gains Women Made over the Past 100 Years

By now, everyone has surely heard the controversy of the extremist Missouri Congressmen, Todd Akin, who is running for Senate.

In a recent television interview, he espoused his beliefs of what he termed "legitimate rape." According to Congressman Akin, who frighteningly sits on the House Science Committee, pregnancies do not result from "legitimate rape" since the magic of a woman’s uterus actually prevents the sperm from fertilizing an egg in a “legitimate rape.”

This justifies the GOP’s denial for abortion funding in cases of rape. The real frightening thing about this revelation is that it isn’t extreme at all, not in today’s national Republican Party that has been hijacked by Mr. Atkin and his ilk.

They continually reject science, free choice and compromise of any sort to their positions. They have all but driven any reasonable Republicans out of Congress.

Mr. Akin’s ideas have been codified in law and co-sponsored by our new Vice Presidential Candidate for the United States, Paul Ryan, with overwhelming Republican support.

Additionally, the two co-sponsored a more extreme bill proposed by the Republican-led Congress known as the “Personhood Amendment,” which grants full rights to fertilized human eggs and would outlaw not only abortion, but also the most popular forms of contraception and even in-vitro fertilization.

American women, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and those ladies who are just not paying attention — WAKE UP!  Your way of life is threatened.

For years, this extremist, but politically-adept, group has been conspiring to take away the freedoms our great-grandmothers fought so hard for us to gain. These ideas are in the Republican platform and have been for years. They are just getting ever so closer to realization and this election could be the tipping point.

During President Obama’s administration, the Republicans have opposed the Liddy Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (the first law the President signed). They voted against renewing the Violence Against Women Act.

They have voted many times to appeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA,) which guarantees free contraception and female wellness-care services including mammography and pap smears. The ACA also prohibits insurance companies from denying insurance for pre-existing conditions, terminating insurance for illness and charging higher premiums to female policy holders.

Monmouth County Women For Obama supports the president’s reelection for many reasons, but nothing is closer to our hearts than safe-guarding the progress women have made in society over the past 100 years.

Women’s success is vital for the success of our families and our nation. Very few households can depend on only one-income earner and many families are supported by women alone.

Monmouth County Women for Obama plans five forums in the county to discuss issues that women care about. Come join us and open your eyes to what is at
stake:

WHAT WOMEN CARE ABOUT Forums:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Hazlet Library from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

  • Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Belmar Pavilion from 7 to 9 pm

  • Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Old Wharf House, Oceanport, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Marilyn,
I'm sure you heard Akin and every other Republican say his remarks were wrong, stupid and not based in fact. But why bother with the truth. Roe V. Wade is here to stay. You know it. Stop with non-issues.
This election should be about the economy. Who is best to turn it around. Obama had 4 years and made everything worse.

At what point during a woman's pregnancy is it unacceptable to abort and unborn child? 30 days? 90 days? 200 days?

Why are those that are not directly affected by such issues so conserned? Those that are not able to become pregnant (men) or are not homosexual seem to have the loudest voices about what those who are should or should not do. Look to improve yourself and allow others to do what is best for themselves.

Marilyn Michaels, did you know the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) indirectly funded Gloria Steinem, the heroine of the women's movement?

Doesn't that bother you that MS Magazine, was doing the bidding of the CIA?

John Jay

I am not upset. I was asking if Mary at what point is it not acceptable to have an abortion and if she knew Gloria Steinem was a CIA lackey.

Marilyn, Great message! Thank you. Not only does the GOP right wing threaten women's rights and gay rights but they also threaten our first amendment - freedom of religion.

John, as you cannot become pregnant; you shouldn't concern yourself with such matters. That decision is to be made by the woman and her doctor. When science allows for men to be able to gestate a fetus to term, then their opinion will become valid. In the mean time, you should focus your energy on the circumcision debate.

Oh Peggy please, enough with the GOP's war on women. Give women some credit already. Any woman with half a brain isn’t falling for it. Why on earth should the government be responsible for providing birth control? Do you really want a society that solely relies on the government to take care of them? Isn’t hard work and earning things on your own important anymore? If you want a government to take care of you, there are plenty of countries out there to choose from, choose one and go. Quite frankly, both men and women are more concerned with the economy and jobs and being able to support their families and themselves. And yes, Akin is a complete fool, there is no disputing that and no one in the GOP is supporting him. Let’s not act like Obama the left winger does not have his own extreme views such as partial birth abortions.

Do I think the gov't should be responsible for providing birth control? No! But,if I;m paying x amount of dollars out of a paycheck,I would expect it to be covered, just as other prescribed medications are covered.

Why shouldn't the father of an unborn child have a say over life and death matters? I find it sexist that women are considered the only ones affected by decisions to abort unborn children.

If the woman or girl is raped, you think her rapist should have a say on whether she is "allowed" to have an abortion or not?Do you realize that it's also the woman decision not to abort her pregnacy if the "father" wants to "get rid of it" so that he won't have to pay child suppor? The woman is the one who has to deal with al of the unpleasantness associated with pregnacy, the wieght gain, swollen feet, backahces, etc. She is the one who has to worry about loosing her job because for taking time off for maternity leave or a difficult pregnancy.Sorry, her decision.

What a false assumption!

The issue isn't when it's acceptable or not acceptable; it's when it's safe or not safe. And it should always be safe. What makes you think a woman who has carried a fetus almost to full term would suddenly decide to have an abortion? A late term abortion takes place when it is medically necessary for the mother because something negative has happened. You can't predict the future to decide when something is "acceptable" or not.

Otter09

If we have to pay for cholesterol medicine, then there is no reason not to have to pay for birth control. They are both the results of "life style choices" for many and genetic or direct medical need for some. I don't see any debate over paying for cholesterol meds, which are largy required for those that can't be bothered to put down a cheeseburger and pick up a carrot. It's amazing how much opinion the masses have when it's about a woman's body and a woman's right to control and plan for procreation or to deal with her monthly cycle. And as I said in the other blog, no one wants women to abort, we all want for PLANNED, HEALTHY and WANTED pregnancies. There will never be a stock answser to when it is or is not acceptable to have an abortion because that decision can only be made by the woman after discussions with her doctor and the father if he's involved. Men do not have the say women do because science has not yet provided for the fetus to gestate to term outside of a woman's body and NO man has the right to determine what another does to their own body. So John, please leave these decisions to women on medical professionals. If you ever knock someone up, then you will have time to have a valid discussion, but until then, it's none of your business.

You do realize that there are people who have led healthy lifestyles, but still have high cholesterol. If my health insurance has no problem paying for vaccines for children and yearly flu shots, they should also pay for birth control.

Acceptable until it's viable outside the womb. I would suggest castration as a better form of birth control. Insurance pays for viagra. It should pay for birth control or castration and I do not mean vasectomy.

Otter09

Marylou, yes, that's why I said "life style choices" for many and genetic or direct medical need for some.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/08/sba-list-to-launch-missouri-ads-against-obama-on-abortion-133435.html

Partial Text from ad: “Many children, more than you might think, actually survive failed abortions and are born alive. I know because I’m one of them,” Ohden says in the SBA List ad. “When he was in the Illinois state Senate, Barack Obama voted to deny basic constitutional protections for babies born alive from an abortion – not once, but four times."

Are you willing to adopt those babies? Are you willing to support them until they reach 18.In many cases, these "babies" are not full term.Have you any idea how much money it costs to care for 1 premature baby? The reason that some of these babies were aborted in the 1st place is that they were very sick or severly handicapped. If the mothers don't have the means to care for them, who will. It's hard enough to place healthy mixed race children with good families,so forget about people adopting them.People like you are always the 1st to complain about having to support the children of poor women until they are 18.You love fetuses, but lose interest in babies once theyy draw their 1st breath.

What an ugly comment from marylou. She's deciding what life is worth saving and who should die because they aren't perfect. What's next? I suppose if the babies didn't have blue eyes and blond hair they wouldn't be any good? Then maybe we can bring religion into the equation of who should go?

They say they want small government yet they want to impose their values on an entire nation. I prefer the ability to make my own choices about my life. I will be voting for Obama to ensure that my freedoms are not taken away.
