Maple Place Students Venture 'Into the Woods'

The way is clear this weekend for the Maple Place School's production of the Sondheim musical.

I have to confess something right up front: I have seen Into the Woods three times on Broadway over the years, so to say that I'm not partial to this musical would be like saying Jules on Cougartown doesn't like red wine. But I wondered as I drove over to Maple Place Thursday afternoon how middle school students would handle the linguistic acrobatics of all of Sondheim's words, words, words. My fears were quickly put aside as I watched Eliza Howard, who plays the Witch, glide through some tricky word play and then saw the whole ensemble march through the musical's theme song. By the time Gabby Scerbo and Alex Dunn performed "Hello Little Girl," as Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, I had a huge smile on my face. Check out the video clip …

Point Road Kids Show Off Their Inner Picassos and O'Keefes at Annual Art Show

The Point Road Art Show showcases the best of students' art on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

For those of us who have had the opportunity to attend, oh, 14 years of art shows at Point Road, it's clear that the work produced by each grade has evolved over time, allowing kids to explore the latest techniques and technology. Patch strolled through the hallways of the Little Silver school earlier this week for a private viewing of what's in store for students' family and friends on Thursday, which includes a drawing for either a boys' or girls' art basket. The focus is this year on technology in art and the show is partially sponsored with funds from PRIDE in Education and The Little Silver Education Association. Michele Davis and Margaret Spencer were the tireless PTO coordinators of the event, evident in the endless hallway ceilings…

The Mothers of Country Day: A Beach Read to Get You Talking

Fair Haven author writes a fish out of water story with a happy ending and a sense of humor. You can pick up a copy at River Road.

The Mothers of Country Day, the new book by Fair Haven author Arlene Matthews, is for every mom who has every parked her dented minivan next to a shiny luxury car at a school parking lot. But it's also for every well to do parent always being hit up for a donor check by her child's headmaster. The comic novel is set firmly in the Two River area with thinly veiled references to its boroughs. The towns of Little Fawn and Lower Fawn exist on a "mythical peninsula," Matthews says. "If that reminds you of anything, I'm not responsible," she says with a smile. Local history buffs will be tipped off by the vaudeville roots of Lower Fawn, the lesser cousin to Little Fawn with it's estates and sprawling lawns. There is even reference to a certain …

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Markham Place for 'Oz' [VIDEO]

The middle school's annual production takes place Thursday through Saturday.

They're off to see the wizard this weekend at Markham Place as students present three performances of this year's musical production, Oz. Not only does the production include inventive choreography, well-rehearsed musical numbers and costumes and scenery produced by Team Files, the music has grown from the standard single piano of shows in years past with the addition of seven student musicians this year. Patch stopped by practice on Tuesday and was wowed by how great the 7th and 8th grade students sounded and how much it added to the show. Karen Feeney, whohwas played the piano for the Markham shows for 17 years, credited music teachers Jennifer Brush and Stephanie Bennett for preparing the students to take on the challenge of the show. …
