@Dan, do you even know what an automatic weapon is. Because if you did, you would know that it is already illegal to own an "automatic weapon" and has been for many many years. The shooter used a "semi auto" rifle which requires a pull of the trigger for each shot, just like every other gun in the world.

And there is nothing saying that the Second Amendment protects civilian possession of those weapons, nor does the Second Amendment protect civilian ownership of all semi-automatic assault-style weapons, such as the AR-15 used at Newtown and Aurora.
