SLIDESHOW: Point Road Students Celebrate Earth Day with Sickles Market

In honor of Earth Day, Point Road students held an assembly and collected decorated bags for the Earth Day Grocery Bag Project.

For the fourth year in a row, owner Bob Sickles, returned to the classroom in order to educate and participate in the Earth Day Grocery Bag Project.

students have been preparing for Earth Day since September by decorating brown shopping bags with Earth Day messages. The bags, donated by Sickles Market, were given to the school to promote saving the planet.

“We received the brown shopping bags from Sickles Market in September and have allowed the students to work on them along with their other projects throughout the year,” explained Dale Dvorak, Art Teacher at Point Road School. “Kids are our future, and the more time they spend learning about taking care of the Earth, the more time they will spend taking care of our planet.”

Students decided to celebrate Earth Day in school their own way on Friday, April 20 by meeting with Sickles and holding an assembly. While with Sickles, each student received a lettuce plant and some valuable information about gardening.

“This is a golden opportunity to get students to eat lettuce,” joked Sickles. “By having the students hold the plant they get to see the vegetables up close instead of seeing it come out of a bag. It closes the loop between gardening and students.
