Little Silver's annual tree lighting was a return to normalcy for some, a reminder of how some things never change.

Mayor Robert C. Neff reminded the hundreds of residents packed in front of borough hall late Sunday afternoon, some spilling off the sidewalks and into Prospect Avenue, of how important it was this year to be thankful for the opportunity to be together -- as a town -- celebrating the holiday season.

And so the Point Road and Markham Place choruses sang and band members filled the air with "Jingle Bells" and when the lights were flipped on the tree at the center of it all and fire engines came roaring down the middle of town, everything seemed alright. Santa Claus had come to town.

It was great to have everyone together : ) I would only hope the sound could be addressed in the future. The kids sang so well and yet in the back I could barely hear them at all. I had to strain to hear and try to sneak up close. Many were talking and not giving their attention b/c of this issue. I'm sure the kids worked hard to prepare so it would be great if everyone could enjoy the music.

Valerie: I had the same experience last year when I got to the tree lighting late and couldn't hear or see a thing! But this year I was super close and didn't miss a note, so I don't know what the answer is. Not everyone can stand at the front. At least we could hear our mayor, which is a vast improvement over a few years ago when the entire sound system was for the birds!
