Oceanport May Seek To Rebuild Boro Hall Above Flood Plain

Borough Hall, the municipal court and the library were all flooded in Hurricane Sandy.

Borough Council announced Thursday that it will look into rebuilding Borough Hall outside the flood plain.

"This is one of the rumors that's true," Mayor Michael Mahon said.

The building which sits at a low elevation at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Monmouth Boulevard was flooded Monday in Hurricane Sandy's storm surge. It sustained signficant damage after flooding 4.5 feet in the court section and about two feet in the library.

"It's kind of mind boggling to look at," he said, referring to the damage at the library.

Borough staff was forced to relocate to Oceanport Hook and Ladder, then later moved to a trailer behind Borough Hall, and then into a double wide trailer on the site.

Mahon said the borough will conduct a cost benefit analysis on different options, such as raising the lowest portions of the building or, "eliminate the problem all together and rebuild somewhere else all together out of the flood plain."

In either case, Mahon said he will look to use grant money for the rebuilding.

why wouldn't the boro consider a building on fort monmouth ? I worked there for 40 plus years as a facilities manager and B- 918 WOULD BE A PERFECT FIT. The bldg needs to be gutted back to the exterior walls rebuilt to fit the boro 's need .At the same time they should consider B-901 which is a large opened space warehouse all fenced in and move the boro public works in it to include all the recycling containers etc .These bldgs i'm ref's are right off main street with it's own gate and road . This option is worth looking into.

Reginald, I'm not familiar with the numbers of the bldgs as much as I am their uses and nick names. What kind of bldg is B-918 and what did you do there?

What a great idea and a way to get a foot hold in the former Fort Monmouth property.
