Neighbor Thwarts Burglary Attempt on Sunday in Little Silver

Local K9 units called to the scene for a search after the suspect fled into nearby woods.

Little Silver Police were called to Garden Road on Sunday when a neighbor called to report seeing a man break a window and enter an unoccupied home there.

According to Chief Daniel Shaffery, patrol units were dispatched at 11:50 a.m. on June 17 to investigate a report that a burglary was in progress. A neighbor reported that a black male wearing jeans, a gray sweatshirt and carrying a backpack had broken the window of a side door five to 10 minutes earlier and entered the house.

The suspect fled into a "heavily wooded area" nearby after being confronted, said Shaffery.

A perimeter was established, he added, and police K-9 units from Long Branch and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office were deployed into the wooded area in an unsuccessful effort to locate the suspect. Little Silver Police units were assisted by police units from Red Bank, Shrewsbury and Rumson.

I know the Police are doing everything they can to catch these low-lifes but as a LS resident, this has been going on now for quite a while. From what I read, it's happening in many towns like Fair Haven, Rumson, etc. The sentence has to change for burglaries. It's simply not tough enough. Give them a minimum of 5 years. Instead, make it 10 years.

Probably the same guy. The crime spree is most likely over.

I'm not sure I understand how someone could flee into the "heavily wooded area" behind Grant Place and not be noticed very quickly? It's not like it's a 1000 acre forest. Shouldn't it be pretty easy to locate a guy with gray sweatshirt and backpack on White Road? And how did he flee after being "confronted" by police and ultimately vanish? There are only three roads he could have gotten to.

The woods there covers many different streets. He could of been parked on lisa, megan, silver white, circle or even in the medical complex? If he crosses into the medical complex and on to the railroad tracks he could of gone anywhere into shrewsbury.

Not Grant Place, it was Garden Road.

The attempted burglary in Little Silver on Sunday happened on Garden Road, not Grant Place as originally reported.
