Menendez Signs On to Immigration Reform Plan

U.S. Sen. Robert Mendendez of New Jersey has put his support behind a bipartisan proposal that will ensure a pathway to legal status for 11 million illegal immigrants.

Eight senior U.S. senators have come up with a bipartisan immigration reform plan, reported Politico.com early Monday morning, that they plan to unveil later today.

NJ Sen. Robert Menendez (D), a longtime advocate for changes in immigration law, is on the panel of eight senators from both parties who came up with the sweeping changes.

The plan, Politico said, will overhaul the current immigration system as well as provide an alternate route to citizenship for the nation's estimated 11 million illegal immigrants.

The blueprint is "most serious bipartisan effort to act on the highly charged issue since George W. Bush’s comprehensive measure was defeated in the Senate in 2007," Politico said.

The senators' proposal would only come into play after stricter enforcement measures were enacted to ensure American employers were hiring workers here legally.

The plan includes a different gateway for citizenship for adults who were brought here illegally as children, and for agricultural workers, Politico said. The preliminary details also hints that illegals will not be able to "jump the line" ahead of immigrants who have patiently waited their turn to immigrate to the United States.

Menendez, a Democratic senator who is slated to become chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, was joined by fellow Democrats Sens. Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin and Michael Bennet. The Republicans who supported the immigration reform proposal are Sens. John McCain, Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham and Jeff Flake, Politico said.

Hey Mrgrumpass, it's not that the illegal pedophile alien was working "for" him as much as "with" him. Child sex abusers work together that way. And when a corrupt politician, or DOJ lawyer, has such Pedophilia urges - it's a tool for Organized Crime. Now it makes sense why Bob Menendez helped cover up the billion dollar corporate Bankruptcy Ring involving the hedge funds and their secretly conflicted law firms.

Except Menendez isn't Mexican. Neither are his ancestors. He's American, born in New York. His parents were from Cuba (that's the island near Florida [the state that sticks out in the south {that's down on most maps}])

I really hope this is some sort of deadpan satire of the stupid comments about Hispanic-Americans, but I'm just not sure anymore.

Why doesn't Senator Menendez enforce our current laws regarding illegal immigrants before drafting a new set of rules, that he no doubt will fail to enforce, also?

Remember, this is the Senator who lunches regularaly with the heads of La Raza (translation - 'The Race') who blatantly panders to all things hispanic.

It's no coincidence that he's pandering for future hispanic votes, instead of his taxpaying consitutuents. This proposed bill is a slap in the face to all immigrants who've come to the US legally.

If they deported ALL the illegals in this country (which is more then 11 million, closer to 20) a few things would happen 1) Americans get their jobs back and the economy turns around 2) the food stamp medicaid bills would be cut by more then 50% 3) English would once again become the national language instead of spanish.

The "sweeping reform" we need is to change our citizenship laws, so these "anchor babies" are NOT automatic citizens. The child should only get citizenship if one or both of the parents are American citizens. Go to Mexico and have a baby the child is not a citizen. Sneak into Mexico and try to live and work. If caught you face 10 years in a Mexican prison and then deportation, if you survive 10 years.

At no time in history have Americans been forced to pay for food, housing, medical, education, legal fees, etc., for more than 25 million illegals, for a minimum of eighteen years. They suck off the system, while working for cash.

My ancestors, including my mother, came here LEGALLY. They didn't slip in under a fence or stay beyond their Visa expiration date. The ILLEGAL community in this country is draining us, the AMERICAN people of resources. Our schools spend money on ESL classes in record numbers, our Welfar system is overloaded with ILLEGALs who are somehow allowed to collect free handouts of my hard earned money. The healthcare system, of which I have been a practicing member for 32 years is going broke giving away free care to ILLEGALs who are not, by law, allowed to be turned away from our ER's.

Menendez is a joke. How this state (and many others ..hello NY and Illinois and DC) continue to elect into office politicians who are under indictment or who have been convicted of crimes is just a constant amazement to me.

David you fool. My great grandparents came here legally, learned the native language, and assimilated into the culture. The ILLEGALS that come here do none of the above, and drain the system, whereas my great grandparents came here with the expectations that they could make something of themselves by working. My inlaws also came here LEGALLY, and with little education were able to become successful by hard work.

My grandfather was from Italy & when he came here he REFUSED ( even at home) to speak anything but English, how it was disrespectful to America to speak any other language. People are not apposed to coming here People are tired of supporting illegal immigrates that have no intention of ever becoming Citizens here.. Getting a free education here ( which most Americans are having a had time sending their own children to college) on top of all the other on top of all the other Gvmt. handout programs. ... Once they get everything they can out of US they go back to " their " country & live like Kings & Queens By the time they are 40( or sooner)
That's what NEEDS to change.... Simple You have 2 years to become a citizen If you DON'T you have to go back....

Amen, brother! Everyone here has descendents who were immigrants, many of us within 2 generations. I know the system is not perfect, but maybe we should give all immigrants work visas and have them pay taxes like everyone else. No laborer is working for less than the minimum wage of $7.25/hr. I don't care what anyone says, this anti-immigration fight is rooted in xenophobia and racism, the same weapons used against the Italians and Irish in the early 20th century. It is diametrically opposed to Christianity and, as a Christian I don't like it at all. Everyone needs to stop quoting the law and change the law if it is wrong. Righteousness must prevail, brother. You nailed the problem...We raise the minimum wage, all the while crying about the fact that people need to earn a living wage, and we effectively increase the unemployment roles because we are pricing our kids out of entry level jobs and thwarting their ability to get experience to earn higher wages later on. The fact is that every time we raise minimum wage we remove incentive to hire unskilled labor and thus increase the rolls of those looking for employment.
Get rid of the illegals - make them come in the right way.

Easy compromise. Don't let any of them vote for 20 years. That is the tradeoff. It also protects the rest of us from having them be used like all the other low information voters are to support more and more handouts.

BTW, on another topic. Why are unemployment benefits taxed? Doesn't that fly in the face of giving out benefits to the unemployed? It's not like we didn't borrow the money to pay the benefits from China in the first place. So we borrow money to then claim we have revenue. Smart!

.....I find it highly amusing ....and even more highly infuriating ...that the 'left' so strenuously "works the words" in conversation to call these 11 million people (in reality twice that many)...."undocumented immigrants" ....."migrant workers" ...."undocumented citizens". It's their continuing effort to make them not feel so "dehumanized" or having their existence be acknowledged with what, again, "the left" feels is a slur.

Yet ....when their efforts seem to be at the turning point to get these persons to instantaneously become citizens ....they (including the liberal media) have zero problem calling the process a "legalization". You can't 'legalize' something ...unless that something wasn't first categorized as 'illegal' to begin with.

....why don't we just call them "Unregistered Democrats".

.....this proposed process towards citizenship, which, when assigned a level of difficulty ....equates to simply sticking out a finger and pressing a button. But at the same time ....one finger, the middle one, is being raised up and stuck in the face of everyone that came to the US legally.

Ric, is the solution to as you put it "he (Reagan) stupidly legalized millions of the illegals back during his administration" to let more and more enter? Do you have an opinion or just sarcasm.

That's like me saying Obama claimed the debt was unpatriotic and irresponsible in 2008 when it was $9 Trillion. We all know it's $16.5 Trillion today and as far as I can tell, Obama no longer thinks its unpatriotic and irresponsible.

We need solutions. Got any?

Donkey Tales, if you look at my other comment further up you'll see I oppose legalizing the illegals. My point about the republicans is no one should think the democrats are the only ones pushing for the illegals over the rights of American citizens. There are many republicans politicians in the pockets of the illegals too.

Where was the Senator when Ft. Monmouth was being closed? Oh I get it, they were not his constituents. He only represents certain people in NJ. So that means those outside his constituency who voted for him are nothing but fools. 'Nuff said. I have enjoyed some of the Menendez cracks though. His next bill will deal with teen unemployment (groan).

Newark, NJ) – U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ), and Representatives Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ-6) and Rush Holt (D-NJ-12), today slammed the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) for its decision to close the Fort Monmouth commissary when the base closes next month. Since 2010, the lawmakers have advocated for DOD to keep the commissary open to continue serving 19,000 service members, surviving spouses, military retirees and their families who the Army had estimated would continue to utilize the commissary after the base closes.

“Since the Bush Administration recommended closing Fort Monmouth, we have worked together to fight this misguided closure, and most recently to keep the commissary open. We are deeply disturbed by the Pentagon’s decision. Closing the commissary is the wrong decision and it adds insult to injury for military families in the region,” said Senator Lautenberg, an Army veteran. “The commissary is a critical resource for military families and this will only serve to heighten the impact of the base closure. We will continue to do everything in our power to support the military retirees and their families who have already sacrificed so much."

Joe R, you are such a water-carrier for the left. You Google search to find anything you possibly can to try and show how much New Jersey's dear Senators care for military causes yet these are the same pukes that are more than willing to vote to cut defense spending to the bone in the first place. But hey New Jersey, we are "fighting" to keep Fort Monmouth open so we voted for the Joint Resolution that disapproved of the BRAC recommendations to make us look good to our constituents even though we had zero influence on what was happening in the first place.

Chris Smith (R-NJ) voted yes on the same resolution, but that probably doesn't count with your ilk since he isn't as "progressive" as your public heroes.

Go Google something else to copy and paste since you have no individual thoughts of your own....

I make union wages which are very good. I'm not saying I want them working out of my local but around my house sure why not. And if I have to work on a Sat or sun my rate is a lot higher. So if I can't be home doing things around the house these guys will work like dogs and it only costs me 1hr pay. I can't believe some people can't accept that.

as we continue to search for those that will do work, re dirty physical menial work, for less and less, we demean our very existance. How many billions of people have revolted over the eons against their "superior" intelligent fellow humans capitalizing on the same old silly creed of "winners take all" or "chosen few" get a heavenly existance because they are worthy by conquering their fellow man.? It always ends with the masses finally realizing it's a dead end and when they turn to run from it the chosen few with all the power we've given them wipe the slate clean with wmds or we masses damned stupid enough to fight each other to death. I think it's time for a little evolutionary revolution world wide. We'll pay a high price for it but an even higher price for not doing it soon. you are all trying to trample the guy next to you underfoot and lost your flavor and will be trampled yourself under the foot of our own corrupt kings and masters we've "elected" to deceive us.

These citizens are loyal taxpayers for many, many years and they do not deserve to be ignored when asking for help. Help people rectify the gross mis-zoning debackle created by FEMA after Sandy. It is about to cause a banking crisis as well as Real Estate backward slide, not to mention displacement of thousands of Senior Citizens.

In my admittedly ignorant view, I believe that before we do give that population such abilities, Pres. Obama et al (Congress, Senators) need to ensure that we have the fertile ability to ensure abundance in job and industry growth. Again, I'm ignorant, and there are many better, keener minds than mine on here: but I do remember learning about FDR and all his New Deal programs that put people to work and galvanized the economy -- and prosperity -- of this nation. So, back to basics, what new FDR New Deal-type programs can now be instituted to get us all back?

Just a thought. Sadly, that's all it may be.

did anybody tell the senators and president pushing to legalize all the illegals here through some that making them legal defeats the whole purpose of them being here? Once legal we have to treat them as actual citizens and pay them actual wages and workmen comp, unemployment, replace their bridge roof with an apartment etc. etc. The best thing we can do for them is drive the men to the border hand them a confiscated gun from one of the buy back programs and tell them to take back their own corrupt government as we should be doing here with out the guns. Do we need guns to take back our government or can we vote ourselves back into prosperity without killing the goons running this country? Menendez must go immediately after this last scandal. no if ans or butts. less their young underage girls then he will if and their butts. what a country.
