The Markham Place Boy’s Basketball team won the Run for the Roses Tournament held at St. Rose High School on Saturday, defeating Brielle by a score of 46 to 38. With this win, the boys ended their season a perfect 24 – 0, Coach Don Nolan’s second undefeated regular season and first Run for the Roses Tournament Championship.
Markham came out strong, putting up 18 points in the first quarter, including 5 three-pointers, and held the lead the rest of the game. John Salcedo put up 21 points, Michael Colao and Mike Rice each scored 5 points, Liam Smith had 4 points, and Matthew Reardon put up 11 points. Also, Michael Colao was named a member of the All-Tournament Team, while John Salcedo was named Tournament MVP.
A large crowd of Warrior faithful, including Little Silver residents and Markham Place teachers, came out yesterday to watch the team end their season securing a spot in the annals of Markham Place History as the only Boy’s Basketball team to go 24 – 0.
After the game, my younger brother, Matthew Reardon, was shooting baskets outside when he said that the team’s motto for the year was this John Wooden quote: “It’s amazing what can be accomplished if no one cares who gets the credit.” I think that says it all.
