Going Once, Going Twice: Point Road Auctions Art for a Cause

The online auction of students' artwork will help fund pediatric cancer research.

Great art is often out of reach for mere mortals but through June 8, over 25 creations by students are up grabs through an online auction that benefits Make Some Noise: Cure Kids Cancer Foundation.

According to Principal Pamela Albert Devine, the second annual fundraising event not only helps fund pediatric cancer research but teaches students to support people in times of need.

"Sometimes a little kindness and some work can make a big difference in the life of someone else," Devine wrote in an e-mail.

Friends and family can place bids online to purchase art work that was done as a collaborative effort that represents each class in the school.

Devine said that the organization, which is on the Little Silver Board of Education approved charity list, has a connection to the Point Road community.

"We have two former (Point Road) students who are very active with this organization," she explained, "both have battled cancer."

The parent of one of those students now serves on the board for Make Some Noise, said Devine, and Markham Place students held a fall fundraiser for the organization.

Bidding will end on June 8 and winners will be contacted beginning next week to come pick up their work of art.

"We use this project to help our students understand how small acts of kindness go a long way and often can motivate and inspire larger acts, such as working on a community service project or volunteering," said Devine.
