5 Things You Need to Know Today in Little Silver and Oceanport: May 17
Don't miss Little Silver's Sidewalk Sales today through Saturday.
Little House in the Suburbs: I would have been a terrible pioneer. I just don't do discomfort and sacrifice well. Take for instance yesterday afternoon. About 10 minutes after walking into my muggy house from being out all day I couldn't take it and flipped on the air conditioning. The cool air definitely helped take the edge off hot dogs and homework and even settlers didn't have to deal with Study Island. Luckily, the National Weather Service is calling for sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s today and through the weekend, so I can throw the windows back open and catch a breeze just in time to study for Friday's spelling test.
Where the Sidewalk Ends: The beautiful weather picture over the next few days is perfect to get out and walk around downtown Little Silver and check out the annual Sidewalk Sales sponsored by the Business and Professional Association. Today through Saturday, businesses throughout the borough will be setting up shop outside and offering deals to shoppers. I'll be setting up a Patch table and camping out in front of the Woman's Exchange so make sure to stop by and say "hi" and pick up some Patch swag for your efforts.
Temporary Closing: From Little Silver Police Chief Dan Shaffery: Effective May 16, the recycling yard at the Department of Public Works on Fairview Avenue will be closed for drop off through May 29 due to construction. Curbside pickup will continue uninterrupted; please do not drop off any recycling at the gate. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation.
SOS: Moms and dads, are you as worried as I am about the upcoming summer vacation from school? That endless, Sahara Desert of time off for kids that needs to be filled by something other than watching hours of ABC Family? Patch has got our back, though, and has compiled a comprehensive list of summer camp options to keep the kiddies off the couch and out of your hair. Now if Patch would just go food shopping for us, we'd be set.
Civics 101: If your are feeling civic-minded, you have two meetings to choose from this evening. The Oceanport Borough Council will meet at 7 p.m. in borough hall for a workshop meeting, which will be followed immediately by its regular meeting. The Oceanport Board of Education also meets tonight, at 7:30 at the Maple Place Library. While there's no agenda posted, look for further discussion on the district's feasibility study for shared services.
